One of Kansas' most distinguished pioneers E. D. Gorham founded and platted the city in 1879. A native of Illinois, he named the streets after cities in Illinois.  Gorham was the first community in the county to have dial telephones and the Gorham State Bank was the first bank to use a Recordak Machine to photocopy checks front and back.  It was installed in 1947.
